NAFPLIO
A nice big city, very lively, with many bars, restaurants, stores open late and many people on the streets.
It was an important port city in ancient times and the first capital of modern Greece, between 1829 and 1934, established by count Ioannis Kapodistrias, who then became Greece’s first Prime Minister. After his assassination in the city, Greece became a kingdom and the capital was moved to Athens by king Otto.
Today, Nafplio is a common weekend destination for Greeks who enjoy good life and fun. Venetian and neoclassical buildings give it an elegant aspect, while the building of the National Bank of Greece is an example of Mycenaean Revival architecture.
Nafplio has 3 fortresses from times when Byzantine and Venetians disputed the power over the region: Palamidi and Akronafplion, on hill tops, and Bourtzi, in an islet.
