EPIRUS
One of the 13 regions of Modern Greece, Epirus is a highly historic land, at the Northwest border with Albania. Comprised between the Pindus Range, the Ambracian Gulf, and the Ionian Sea with Kerkyra, it has one of the most exuberant nature scenes in the country. Snow-covered massifs, emerald rivers, dense forest and largely cultivated plains compose a wild and striking landscape. Superb cattle, sheep, milk and water production make the area a reference in those items and related food and goodies. The largest urban center is the capital Ioannina, a modern university town that grew around a big lake, with vestiges of its strong past scattered throughout the city and its surroundings. Picturesque mountain villages make Epirus a very attractive destination, especially in the cold months. Among those, Metsovo is popular for winter sports and romantic escapades. A long way off the beaten path, a must-know part of the real Greece.
