PHTHIOTIS
Backed by the mythological Mount Othrys, Lamia is the capital of this ancient land, home of Achilles and place of memorable battles. Lying between the Aegean Malian Gulf and half a dozen Greek regions, it was a major target for invaders and played a remarkable role in the history of Greece. Its mountainous landscape provided the ideal setting for the 300 Spartans to face and delay Persian offense in Thermopylae, in the most courageous confrontation ever. This is the most important spot to visit in Phthiotis. Coming from Evia or from Athens, a nice place to stay is Kamena Vourla, a beach town and resort only a few minutes from there.
All 3 locations are on the Southeast side and very easy to reach by national roads.
