IOANNINA
The capital of Epirus is marked by its historic past and its unique landscape.
Although strongly patriot, the people of Ioannina was under a controversial muslim tyrant for many of its latest years of ottoman rule, who favored from the isolated geographic position to have a government of his own. This out-of-pattern political setting brought up a cultural mix that is evident on buildings and monuments, like several mosques and an outstanding fortress that feature by Lake Pamvotis, the town’s living core and main postcard. Highly intellectual, Ioannina was the birthplace of important scholars and is home to leading academic institutions. An emblematic city to be visited by those who wish to enjoy Greece beyond the usual stereotype.
