METEORA
monks during ottoman occupation in the XIV Century, when the first church was built over
one of the giant rock columns. Second in importance only to Mount Athos (the sacred mountain
with 20 monasteries, close to the Macedonian border with Turkey), Meteora once had
24 of these Byzantine centers. Of those, only 6 are still active. Cherishing tradition to its most,
priests and nuns keep a simple lifestyle, based in subsistence, study, pray and introspection.
This peace and mystery complex was declared a UNESCO Heritage Site, and is the best way
into the comprehension of Christianity to Modern Greece. An out-of-this-world open-air live
monument of nature and religious power that you will not leave the same as you walked in.
